Course Overview

For DJs and music producers who want to combine their creative music-making with the practical skills needed to run live events and festivals. You’ll develop advanced production techniques alongside hands-on experience in live sound, event logistics, and festival staging, giving you the tools to thrive both behind the decks and behind the scenes.

You’ll dive into core areas such as music production, DJing, live event fundamentals, mixing, and live event production. The course also covers event law, logistics, and sustainable event practice, supporting your development as a versatile artist-manager. Optional modules in Years 2 and 3 enable you to specialise further in immersive audio, marketing and promotion, commercial music creation, performance technologies, and festival production.

As part of a collaborative community with musicians, vocalists, producers, and event managers across our music degrees, you’ll work on real-world projects that reflect the interconnected nature of today’s music industry. Whether you aim to build your career as a DJ-producer with strong event management skills or want to lead innovative live music experiences, this course equips you to succeed.

In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in music production, live event design, DJing, and mixing. You’ll explore essential tools and workflows using industry-standard software and hardware, while gaining practical experience in planning and delivering small-scale music events. Through modules focused on creative production, performance, and event logistics, you’ll begin to shape your artistic identity and develop the core skills needed to thrive in the live music industry.

Explore the music, sound and events industries while developing the creative, collaborative, and professional skills needed to build a sustainable career in your chosen field.

Music Production

Build foundational skills in digital music production using industry-standard software, while exploring diverse creative approaches that reflect your identity and artistic direction.

Live Event Fundamentals

Learn how live events come to life, from concept to delivery. You’ll explore audience experience, event design, logistics, accessibility and safety, while gaining a solid understanding of how teams collaborate to produce professional shows.

Mixing

This module builds creative and technical mixing skills, exploring tools, workflows, and techniques to gain the confidence and insight to make informed, artistic decisions in a professional mix environment.

Live Event Production

Turn planning into practice as you produce and deliver small-scale events. You’ll build skills in scheduling, artist liaising, budgeting and licensing, while managing teams and technical elements to create well-run, engaging event experiences.

DJing & Live Performance

Explore the core skills and techniques required to excel in DJing and remixing, including beatmatching, EQ control, and transitions, alongside advanced techniques like live remixing, mashups, and performance effects.

In Year 2, you’ll deepen your technical and creative skillset across music production and event delivery. Core modules focus on professional practice, event law and logistics, and advanced production. You’ll also begin to tailor your direction through optional modules in immersive audio, hardware production, commercial music creation, integrative performance technologies, and marketing. This year supports greater independence, encouraging you to apply your learning to real-world projects and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Building on Industry Foundations, this module focuses on professional development, including valuing your work and developing an understanding of contracts, rights management, and how to generate sustainable income long-term.

Event Law & Logistics

Understand the legal and safety responsibilities and frameworks behind live event delivery. You’ll cover licensing, contracts, risk assessments, insurance and accessibility, learning how to plan responsibly, meet regulations and create safe, successful experiences for artists and audiences.

Creative Research Practice

Explore how research can inform and expand your work in live sound and events. You’ll investigate topics that matter to your practice, from audience behaviour and sustainability to event formats and cultural trends, while developing skills in critical thinking, project planning and reflective analysis that will support your final year portfolio and innovation work.

Sustainable Event Practice

Plan and deliver a live event that prioritises sustainability, ethics and social impact. You’ll explore accessible design, resource use, environmental impact and wellbeing. Gaining hands-on experience delivering purposeful, inclusive events that respond to real-world challenges.

Advanced Music Production
This module further refines your creative and technical approach to music production, exploring advanced techniques in composition, arrangement, sound design, synthesis, and audio processing, and experimenting with innovative production methods.

Hardware Production
Explore hardware-based music production tools and setups, including synthesisers, drum machines, samplers, modular systems, guitar pedals, vocal processors, and drum triggers, developing a hands-on approach to sound creation and production.

Composition & Arrangement
Designed to develop composition, arrangement, and songwriting fundamentals, this module explores how arrangement choices can enhance storytelling and covers the core techniques in melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and texture.

Marketing & Promotion

Explore the principles, tools and strategies of marketing and promotion within the music industry, including social media, digital distribution, content creation, how to communicate your message and build a presence.

Integrative Performance Technologies

Experiment with creative and technical tools such as show synchronisation systems, reactive visuals, and live processing to support performances. Working individually and with performers/artists, you’ll prototype and deliver live experiences that reflect your role and specialism within contemporary event production.

Commercial Music Creation

Create music for commercial use, learning the professional requirements for sync licensing, branded content and production libraries and exploring the roles of producers, songwriters, composers, and writers in different contexts.

Immersive Audio

Discover the creative world of immersive audio, focusing on mixing and mastering in Dolby Atmos. Explore core principles of immersive sound, including object-based mixing, multichannel signal flow and spatial processing.

Your final year is focused on professional readiness, innovation, and self-directed work. You’ll complete two major projects: one that explores bold new ideas in music production or event design, and another that builds a professional portfolio aligned with your career goals. Optional modules allow you to explore areas such as leadership, collaborative practice, or music education. You can choose to take a research-led module in Sound Cultures, developing critical thinking and contextual insight, or focus on hands-on event planning through a practical module in festival production. Both pathways support your growth as a confident, adaptable, and industry-aware creative professional.

This is the beginning of your final-year innovation journey where you will challenge the conventions of your creative discipline and build on the technical, creative and research skills developed throughout your degree.

Industry Portfolio Development

Plan, shape and build a professional portfolio that reflects your creative identity, strengths, and long-term goals, researching professional expectations, exploring formats and creating a strategy tailored to your sector.

Innovation: Realisation

Realise the work completed during the Innovation: Exploration module, bringing together your technical, creative, and research skills and taking your initial idea through to a completed outcome.

Industry Portfolio Delivery

Building on the Industry Portfolio Development module, you will finalise a body of work that aligns with your professional goals and presents your skills clearly to your intended audience.

This module invites you to critically explore the cultural, social, and political dimensions of sound and music, applying research methodologies explored in Creative Research Practice.

Festival Production: Sound, Staging and Technical Design

Discover the fast-paced and collaborative world of festival production, with a focus on the advanced technical, logistical, and creative considerations required to deliver safe, high-quality environments for artists and audiences. 

Music Education & Wellbeing Practice

Investigate how music can be used in educational, therapeutic and community settings as you explore its role in supporting learning, wellbeing and social connection.

Management & Leadership in the Music Industry

This module will build your confidence, knowledge and adaptability to succeed in complex industry environments; equipping you with the professional skills needed to lead, manage and innovate in the industry.

Collaborative Creative Practice

Design, develop and deliver an original creative project in collaboration with others. You will refine your creative identity while you contribute to a shared artistic vision.

Signature System Design

Create a personalised technical system that supports your creative and professional trajectory, such as a custom production workflow, a sample instrument, an audio plug-in or a seamless live rig for performance.

How you’ll learn

Learning is hands-on, collaborative, and grounded in real-world creative practice. You’ll work in professional studios, event spaces, and production labs using industry-standard tools for music production, DJing, and live event delivery.

Your learning is shaped through workshops, seminars, collaborative briefs, and live projects. These experiences build your confidence across event planning, sound production, creative direction, and team-based delivery.

You’ll learn alongside music producers from across other specialist degrees, as well as students on the Live Sound and Event Management course. Together, you’ll develop and deliver events that reflect how music, sound, and performance come together in professional contexts, whether that’s a club night, festival stage, or interdisciplinary showcase.

Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to experiment, take creative risks, and refine your practice through feedback and collaboration. This emphasis on teamwork and cross-disciplinary connection mirrors the realities of today’s music and events industries.

On average you should allow for between 40-50 hours per week for your studies, of which approximately 25% will be taught (c.10 hours) and 75% will be self-study.

Who's this course for?

We’re looking for the scene starters, the self-taught DJs, bedroom producers, and grassroots promoters already putting on shows, making music, or organising parties. You might be running club nights, programming events, or building your profile as a live performer. You’re entrepreneurial, creatively driven, and ready to turn your passion into something bigger. Whether you want to manage artists, launch a label, start a festival, or take your productions and events to the next level, this course is for those ready to make their mark on the music industry.

Entry Requirements

96-112 UCAS Points

As a guide our typical offer at undergraduate level is 96-112 UCAS Tariff points, primarily from Level 3 qualifications such as but not limited to A-levels, a BTEC/UAL Extended Diploma or a Foundation Diploma. 

We consider all applications on their own individual merit and potential, you will be invited to an interview/audition, where you will have the opportunity to discuss your experience and suitability for the course. 

We welcome applications from all subject backgrounds, whether you’ve specialised in STEM, the arts or humanities. If you do not hold the minimum entry requirements but can demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation you will be considered on an individual basis.
