Course Overview

The BA (Hons) Music & Sound for Film & Game course is for composers, producers, and sound creatives who want to work in screen media, interactive storytelling, and immersive entertainment. You’ll develop the creative, technical, and collaborative skills needed to produce original music and sound for film, TV, games, and beyond.

You’ll explore key areas of practice, including scoring, sound design, location recording, Foley, and middleware integration. From cinematic orchestration to experimental textures, the course supports a wide range of creative approaches. You’ll work on briefs that mirror industry workflows, gaining experience in composing to picture, crafting sound for narrative impact, and developing ideas that enhance story, character, and emotion.

Optional modules in Years 2 and 3 allow you to specialise or diversify across areas such as post-production, immersive audio, commercial music, and interactive performance technologies. You’ll also collaborate with students from across our specialist music degrees, including composers, producers, and technologists, building a network that reflects the creative industries.

Module Details

In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in music production, composition, and audio for screen. You’ll explore essential skills in recording, mixing, location sound, and Foley, while beginning to understand how music and sound shape story, mood, and emotion in visual media.

You’ll study core techniques in sound design and composing to picture, and begin to develop your own creative voice through practice-based projects and experimentation. This year is about gaining fluency with key tools, workflows, and concepts in screen-based audio.

Industry Foundations

Explore the music, sound and events industries while developing the creative, collaborative, and professional skills needed to build a sustainable career in your chosen field.

Music Production

Build foundational skills in digital music production using industry-standard software, while exploring diverse creative approaches that reflect your identity and artistic direction.

Location Recording & Foley

Develop the practical skills and creative techniques to capture high-quality audio on location and create immersive Foley sound effects, gaining hands-on experience working with industry-standard equipment in professional studio spaces.

Mixing

This module builds creative and technical mixing skills, exploring tools, workflows, and techniques to gain the confidence and insight to make informed, artistic decisions in a professional mix environment.

Sound Design for Film & Game

This module introduces you to sound design for screen-based and interactive media. You will explore how sound is created, shaped, and manipulated to support narrative, atmosphere, and interactivity.

Composition for Film & Game

Discover core compositional techniques used in film, television, and game music, and explore how music shapes narrative, mood, and player experience by analysing and composing for several media contexts.

In Year 2, you’ll expand your skills in composition and sound design for visual media, developing a deeper understanding of storytelling through sound. Core modules such as Storytelling with Sound and Sound Design & Middleware allow you to explore how music and audio function across film, games, and interactive platforms.

You’ll also begin to tailor your creative direction through optional modules in areas such as scoring and arranging, post-production, commercial music creation, and advanced production. This year supports greater creative ownership while strengthening your technical confidence and collaborative capabilities.

Industry Practice

Building on Industry Foundations, this module focuses on professional development, including valuing your work and developing an understanding of contracts, rights management, and how to generate sustainable income long-term.

Storytelling With Sound

Building on production, recording, sound design, and composition skills,  this module explores how sound communicates story beyond the screen or page through rhythm, tone, spatiality, and silence.

Creative Research Practice

Explore how research can inform and expand your work as a music professional. You’ll investigate areas that inspire your practice, from music culture to genre, film or technique, while developing skills in critical thinking, project planning and reflective analysis that will support your final year portfolio and innovation work.

Sound Design & Middleware

Develop advanced sound design and implementation skills using middleware, such as Wwise, FMOD, and Unity Audio, for video games, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and interactive installations.

Option Modules

Advanced Music Production

This module further refines your creative and technical approach to music production, exploring advanced techniques in composition, arrangement, sound design, synthesis, and audio processing, and experimenting with innovative production methods.

Post-production

Develop advanced skills in audio post-production for film, television, and games, exploring the complete post-production workflow, including dialogue editing, ADR, Foley, sound design, mixing, and mastering for screen-based media.

Scoring & Arranging

Discover scoring and arranging for visual media and music, working in notation, graphic scores, DAWs, or other formats that suit your creative process and exploring how to create emotional impact.

Hardware Production

Explore hardware-based music production tools and setups, including synthesisers, drum machines, samplers, modular systems, guitar pedals, vocal processors, and drum triggers, developing a hands-on approach to sound creation and production.

Advanced Mixing & Mastering

This module focuses on advanced mixing and mastering techniques, including detailed approaches to EQ, dynamics processing, stereo imaging, harmonic enhancement, spatial depth, and mastering for a range of distribution formats.

Commercial Music Creation

Create music for commercial use, learning the professional requirements for sync licensing, branded content and production libraries and exploring the roles of producers, songwriters, composers, and writers in different contexts.

Immersive Audio

Discover the creative world of immersive audio, focusing on mixing and mastering in Dolby Atmos. Explore core principles of immersive sound, including object-based mixing, multichannel signal flow and spatial processing.

Marketing & Promotion

Explore the principles, tools and strategies of marketing and promotion within the music industry, including social media, digital distribution, content creation, how to communicate your message and build a presence.

Your final year is focused on creative independence, professional readiness, and innovation. You’ll complete two major self-directed projects: one focused on developing an industry-facing portfolio that showcases your strengths as a composer or sound designer for visual media, and another that gives you space to explore new ideas or technologies in your chosen area of practice.

You can further shape your experience through optional modules in music education, leadership, or collaborative practice, depending on your career aspirations. A research-led module in Sound Cultures encourages you to critically reflect on your work and its connection to wider social, cultural, and artistic landscapes - helping you better understand your role as a creative professional in the film, game, and media industries.

This is the beginning of your final-year innovation journey where you will challenge the conventions of your creative discipline and build on the technical, creative and research skills developed throughout your degree.

Industry Portfolio Development

Plan, shape and build a professional portfolio that reflects your creative identity, strengths, and long-term goals, researching professional expectations, exploring formats, and creating a strategy tailored to your sector.

Innovation: Realisation

Realise the work completed during the Innovation: Exploration module, bringing together your technical, creative, and research skills and taking your initial idea through to a completed outcome.

Industry Portfolio Delivery

Building on the Industry Portfolio Development module, you will finalise a body of work that aligns with your professional goals and presents your skills clearly to your intended audience.

Sound Cultures

This module invites you to critically explore the cultural, social, and political dimensions of sound and music, applying research methodologies explored in Creative Research Practice.

Investigate how music can be used in educational, therapeutic and community settings as you explore its role in supporting learning, wellbeing and social connection.

Signature System Design

Create a personalised technical system that supports your creative and professional trajectory, such as a custom production workflow, a sample instrument, an audio plug-in or a seamless live rig for performance.

Management & Leadership in the Music Industry

This module will build your confidence, knowledge and adaptability to succeed in complex industry environments; equipping you with the professional skills needed to lead, manage and innovate in the industry.

Collaborative Creative Practice

Design, develop and deliver an original creative project in collaboration with others. You will refine your creative identity while you contribute to a shared artistic vision.

How you’ll learn

Learning is hands-on, exploratory, and driven by real-world creative practice. You’ll work in professional studios, production labs, and post-production suites using industry-standard tools such as digital audio workstations, field recorders, foley pits, and middleware platforms for interactive sound design.

Your learning will be supported through workshops, seminars, collaborative briefs, and guided critique sessions. These are designed to develop your technical fluency, creative thinking, and professional workflow as a composer or sound designer.

You’ll collaborate with students across ten interconnected music degrees, building the communication, planning, and project management skills needed for success in film, game, and media production environments.

Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to experiment, refine your creative process, and take ownership of your artistic development. You will be supported by constructive feedback from tutors and peers.

On average you should allow for between 40-50 hours per week for your studies, of which approximately 25% will be taught (c.10 hours) and 75% will be self-study.

  • Portfolio development of live performance, creative, practical and/or technical work.

Who's this course for?

We’re looking for aspiring composers and sound designers with a solid foundation in music and a passion for storytelling through sound. 

You might already be writing music to picture, exploring sound design, or experimenting with game engines and middleware. Perhaps you play an instrument, have a background in music theory, or are developing your skills in a home studio. 

This course will help you expand your creative and technical abilities, build a professional portfolio, and gain the confidence to pursue a career in the creative industries.

Entry Requirements

96-112 UCAS Points

As a guide our typical offer at undergraduate level is 96-112 UCAS Tariff points, primarily from Level 3 qualifications such as but not limited to A-levels, a BTEC/UAL Extended Diploma or a Foundation Diploma. 

We consider all applications on their own individual merit and potential, you will be invited to an interview/audition, where you will have the opportunity to discuss your experience and suitability for the course. 

We welcome applications from all subject backgrounds, whether you’ve specialised in STEM, the arts or humanities. If you do not hold the minimum entry requirements but can demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation you will be considered on an individual basis.

For applicants whose first language is not English, we accept a variety of English language tests and they are listed on Falmouth University's International Entry Requirements page. If you don’t yet meet our undergraduate degree entry requirements, our Access to HE Diplomas offer a flexible and tailored route to prepare you for higher education.
