What did you do before joining dBs?
I was a senior lecturer in film music composition at Leeds Conservatoire and senior associate teacher in classical guitar at the University of Bristol.
Why did you first get into composition for film?
I first ventured into film composition because I was captivated by the profound impact music has on storytelling and emotional engagement in films, games, and television. The ability of music to convey complex emotions, enhance narratives, and connect with audiences on a deep level intrigued me. I was inspired by how a well-crafted score can transform a scene, intensify the viewer's experience, and leave a lasting impression. This fascination with the communicative power of music in multimedia ultimately drove me to pursue a career in film composition, where I could blend my passion for music with the art of storytelling.

What do you love most about what you do?
What I love most about teaching and composition is the opportunity to inspire and guide students in their creative journeys. In teaching, I cherish the moments when I can help students discover their unique voices and develop their skills to produce impactful music for various media. In composition, I find joy in the intricate process of crafting music that enhances and elevates the narrative, whether in films, TV, or games. The ability to blend technical expertise with creative expression and witness the transformative power of music in storytelling is what drives my passion in both teaching and composing.
Tell us about your proudest career moment?
My proudest career moment is winning multiple awards for the original score of "Clownface" at the Los Angeles Film Awards 2019, including Best Score. This recognition validated my dedication to film composition and highlighted my ability to create compelling, emotionally resonant music. The accolades from international festivals further solidified my reputation in the industry, showcasing my skill in blending technical proficiency with creative artistry to enhance cinematic storytelling. This achievement not only brought personal satisfaction but also opened new opportunities for collaboration and growth in my career.
What do you get up to outside of your role at dBs?
Outside of my role at dBs, I enjoy a variety of activities that keep me balanced and inspired. I love reading, which broadens my perspective and fuels my creativity. Practising classical guitar allows me to refine my skills and express my passion for music. I also prioritise staying active by going to the gym and spending time outdoors, which helps me maintain my physical and mental well-being. Additionally, I have a strong passion for travelling, as it provides me with new experiences and cultural insights that enrich both my personal and professional life.
Tell us something our students may not know about you?
Something our students may not know about me is that I was an avid player of the Sega Mega Drive when it first came out. I was mesmerised by how good the soundtracks for games were, despite the criticism they received for their 8-bit sound. This fascination with music led me to pursue a career in composition for film and media. Interestingly, I also have a law degree with a focus on environmental law. Before deciding to focus solely on music composition, I was dedicated to environmental advocacy, appreciating the power of words and communication in law, much like the powerful communication conveyed through music.
